| splishsplash | Posted 7/26/2006 11:49:36 AM | show profile | email poster Does anyone know who the health editor is at Marie Claire? I know Marty Munson was recently bumped up from health to deputy ed. I heard they had a new editor on board (Colleen Oakley?). Is she handling health? FWIW, I did call but kept getting voicemail (and I'm stuck inside due to weather, so don't have a recent issue). Thanks! |
| ant-03 | Posted 7/26/2006 1:03:00 PM | show profile Another related question: Anyone know who edits their "Stunt" essays? |
| deadline | Posted 7/26/2006 1:09:16 PM | show profile Colleen Oakley is listed as one of the senior editors. I have a copy of the mag, but I didn't see a health editor title. |
| deadline | Posted 7/26/2006 4:58:44 PM | show profile I was wondering if you might be able to tell me the email format for the mag. It sounds like you've pitched to them before. Would you be able to tell me who you would send a pitch to - deputy, senior or managing editor. My idea is not a health story. It is more of a hard news topic, but I see they have about one of these stories per issue. Thanks. |
| splishsplash | Posted 7/27/2006 1:41:18 AM | show profile deadline It's firstinitiallastname@hearst.com. It's been a couple of months since I last pitched them (Marty), so I may be wrong, but I believe Julia Savacool handles news stories. |
| deadline | Posted 7/28/2006 2:01:04 PM | show profile Thank you so much. If she is not the right person do you think she will she write back and tell me who is? Also, how quickly do they usually get back to you. I am asking because I will be going away in about a month and would like to know if they have an interest before that. Thanks again. And good luck with your pitch. |
| camillepayne | Posted 7/28/2006 9:01:13 PM | show profile | email poster marty is the right person to speak with and bounce ideas off. in my experience, she's good to work with. |
| Newsy | Posted 7/28/2006 10:14:45 PM | show profile Does anyone know if MC takes personal essays? I'm thinking of pitching one of mine to them... |

| arewrites | Posted 7/30/2006 6:50:07 AM | show profile The best way to find out what a magazine looks for (personal essays or whatever) is to read a few issues of the magazine. |
| deadline | Posted 8/3/2006 3:47:25 PM | show profile Camillepayne and Splishsplash - thank you guys so much. It's my first big mag pitch. We'll see what happens. |
| Newsy | Posted 8/3/2006 3:50:59 PM | show profile Good luck! Let us know how it goes...the new EIC seems good from what I've read of her in the new issue. Looks like she's got a lot of new ideas. |
| Stephanerd3 | Posted 8/4/2006 9:40:12 AM | show profile | email poster Marty tells me that they're going to be having a shift in their content, so looking through back issues isn't going to necessarily tell you what they're looking for. She mentioned that they're going to be more open to personal essays, but only if they're not earnest. They should be somewhat "thinky" and "rakish in tone." A "funny, cheeky NY Magazine approach." And Marty has always been pretty great at getting back to me right away (not that it's been helpful in me actually getting published :) ). ------ steph - contains multitudes, yet still spends most of her time with the copy machine. |
| splishsplash | Posted 8/4/2006 10:46:11 AM | show profile Same here. The times I've pitched her, she's gotten back to me within a couple days. I believe the longest was a week. It's likely you won't receive a response that quickly, though, Deadline. Not now, anyhow. Since MB did a HTP on the mag recently, and they changed a few editors, everyone there is probably swamped. I plan to start chipping away at the mag in a week or so. >>And Marty has always been pretty great at getting back to me right away (not that it's been helpful in me actually getting published :) ).<< |
| chrisssa | Posted 8/4/2006 10:10:48 PM | show profile | email poster marie claire so is Marty the contact now for beauty? I thought it was Didi Gluck (sp?)? We are pitching a beauty product (exfoliant) and hoping for some coverage in these types of mags. |
| deadline | Posted 8/8/2006 6:08:05 PM | show profile I'm still waiting, but I feel good just having sent my query. Just wondering if you guys have been told why they didn't want your stories. I am wondering if I will at least get that. But I am keeping my fingers crossed. I feel like you guys are sort of my Marie Claire suport group.Sometimes these bbs are not so friendly, and people post just to tell people to do some more research on their own or act like they are better than others. Thanks again for your help, and I wish you the best too! |
| Stephanerd3 | Posted 8/9/2006 7:36:58 AM | show profile | email poster If you send to Marty Munson, she usually gives at least a brief explanation of why a piece isn't right for the mag. Sometimes, she'll try to work with you to make it a better fit. ------ steph - contains multitudes, yet still spends most of her time with the copy machine. |
| deadline | Posted 8/9/2006 11:28:41 AM | show profile Hi Stephanerd3, I did send it to Marty. I can't wait to hear what she thinks. I hope it is what they are looking for. A few people told me they thought the story would be a good fit for MC so that is kind of why I pitched to the Mag. But you never know. Thanks again. |
| deadline | Posted 8/14/2006 4:30:26 PM | show profile Hey guys, I was just wondering if any of you have sent your pitches in yet? I am still waiting to see what they think. |
| Stephanerd3 | Posted 8/14/2006 4:43:04 PM | show profile | email poster Try sending an e-mail followup in one to two weeks, or even call her office. I find that sometimes editors need that followup to give them the push to respond. ------ steph - contains multitudes, yet still spends most of her time with the copy machine. |
| deadline | Posted 8/14/2006 4:59:37 PM | show profile You would call? I thought you were never to call. I don't want to blow it by being impatient. |
| ItsAMysteryNY | Posted 8/15/2006 9:41:17 AM | show profile THat is good news. Another market for personal essays. I just recently rewrote one (again) and am trying to find the *right* market for it. But of course it'll help to see one to know the exact tone they're loking for. Do you know when they're going to start using them? >>Stephanerd3 Posted ? 8/4/2006 9:40:12 AM | show profile | email poster Marty tells me that they're going to be having a shift in their content, so looking through back issues isn't going to necessarily tell you what they're looking for. | Stephanerd3 | Posted 8/15/2006 10:05:54 AM | show profile | email poster Well, I wasn't told personally when they would show up, but I believe MB was posting something on looking out for altered content in the fall issues...perhaps starting in October? And as for calling...some editors hate phone calls while others may not give you the time of day unless you take the initiative of calling them up. In some cases, you'll never get an answer or explanation unless you catch them on the phone so, as nervous as I am making that call, I force myself to do it. ------ steph - contains multitudes, yet still spends most of her time with the copy machine. |
| deadline | Posted 8/15/2006 10:32:12 AM | show profile You have called this editor? I think I will wait a bit longer. I can't imagine that she wants to take calls for all the pitches she gets. But it sounds like you have had some luck with picking up the phone. I am trying to believe that the wait just means they are thinking about using my story. |
| deadline | Posted 8/15/2006 4:27:32 PM | show profile HELP! I just realized I made an awful mistake. I pitched to Marty when I should have pitched to Julia since I have a news story. Maybe this is why I haven?t heard anything. Did I just kill my chances? Should I send it again to Julia? I had not read the HTP until just now where it clearly says news goes to Julia. What should I do? I appreciate your advice. Thanks guys. |
