| twine | Posted 8/11/2006 5:59:58 PM | show profile The HTW says they want essays but doesn't say whether to pitch or send the whole thing. |
| Random Citizen | Posted 8/11/2006 6:49:17 PM | show profile It says, "Etiquette: Make the pitch as short as possible. Give a clear synopsis of your idea and state why it would be great for Jane and why you are the person to write it. Pitch by email only, and include a clear indication of the story's topic in the subject line..." |
| miss_rachelh | Posted 8/11/2006 10:07:17 PM | show profile I would be inclined to (and have) go the normal personal essay route and submit the whole thing. The thing with personal essays is that you can't really tell what they're going to be like until they're completed, so I can't see a mag like Jane accept one off a pitch alone unless you were Amy Sedaris or something. I've found the Jane staff really good to deal with for pitches, actually - they're very quick to express interest in an idea or turn it down. Usually a 24-hour turn around. |

| pinky | Posted 8/12/2006 6:46:48 PM | show profile Maybe send the entire essay, but make sure you cover letter is like a pitch, in case that's all the ed wants to read? |
| twine | Posted 8/14/2006 2:00:51 PM | show profile thanks everyone. |
| Angela Dobbs | Posted 8/14/2006 3:23:35 PM | show profile Ummm...like I've pitched really good article queries to Jane for FOB. Very timely. Very niche-hip. Very edgy. And, I NEVER heard back from them. NEVER! Ugh...so I have given up on this pub. Plus, I really hate the layout. I was really surprised to see the entry about how good this pub is to deal with... Good luck to the essayist...however, the essays that have been published seem to come mostly from well-knowns, even if they can't write... |
