Would you write for Aljazeera? Has anyone here? Just wondering what people's thoughts are.

I wouldn't. Just as I wouldn't work for Fox News. Propaganda.

Just like I would't work for CNN. The WORST type of propaganda. Fox fades in comparison.

I would..
I'd write for Al Jazeera. I've written for Fox, CNN, ABC and NBC. The fact is that they're pretty much all the same. In fact I find it interesting that while some of the other networks look askance at Al Jazeera, they're very willing to use clips from their on air programming. Also, it depends what you're writing... say for example, you're writing style segments... why wouldn't you do that? Or, if they asked you to work on a segment about world music. There are so many facets to writing for a TV network. Check it out before you dismiss it.

would love to
I'd love to work for them - as a correspondent in Europe or USA... I would never live in the Middle East though. Allergic to sand storms....

The question is whether they would hire you to write for them. The operation is huge, and I know at least the TV network is manged by Brits -- not sure about the whole operation. I toured the new HQ in Qatar, it's enormous and shiny! Personally I don't think it's as bad as FOX. I think people that say that probably watch FOX a lot more than they've ever closely followed what Al-jazeera publishes. They get their panties in a wad over the terrorist videos they obtain (Jealousy! 'cause everyone knows FOX would be happy to be able to be the first to talk about snuff films) and their more or less crystal clear oppostion to the invastion and occupation of Iraq by the United States, but I find a lot of their content to be quite good, actually, and anti-"Islamofascist" or whatever white Republicans are calling it this week.

FOX -ALJAZEERA what gives
I'm pretty new to this forum. So I'm ju wondering. I see some of you have a problem with aljazeera and fox. Yet I have not seen freelance writers HERE bash those who write for "custom publications" or "advertorials". WHY$$$$$$!!!

totally right. who are we to bash anyone? hell, if they are hiring, i will work for them.

who are we kidding?
UGoGirl Posted – 9/9/2006 9:15:22 AM | show profile
Okay I'll admit it. I've never watched Al-Jazeera and I don't watch Fox (other than occasionally when traveling and channel surfing).

You know what, I have to add that working for Fox would probably kill me, but my parents would love it.

I had been a reporter for 10 years - and one Sunday I had a big colorful story published in the Sun-Times - my mother called me and said "Wow! Congratulations! You're a reporter!"

Fox would probably get her attention.

That being said, what is A/J looking for? I know they have increased their presence in the U.S. - but is this something you'd like to do? Don't judge the organization; judge the job. They are actually quite reputable but if the beat is not something you are comfortable with, then don't do it.

"homeworkdc -- FOX -ALJAZEERA what gives"

I have only two contacts who work at Fox, and my impression is that what you've read people post here about Fox sounds legit.

What I think is funnier than anything is - I know a liberal gay guy and a very liberal woman who work at Fox headquarters in NY and if their personal lives and political views were passed around at the exec level -- they would lose their job. So... that says enough for me about Fox.

Dave Marash and Other Top Journos
Dave Marash and a lot of other top journalists have gone to work for Al Jazeera's international channel. It appears to be a reputable news organization with the values many of its leaders got from their time at the BBC. You can see our FishbowlNY interview with Marash here:

He talks about working for the channel.
