| wwb | Posted 9/22/2006 7:23:26 PM | show profile Can anyone give me an idea of what associate editors make at a national consumer magazine in NYC? Thank you. |
| pleiades | Posted 9/23/2006 10:57:47 AM | show profile Check out the Salary Report link on ed2010.com. It's user-driven, but I don't know why someone wouldn't be honest about what they post. |
| wwb | Posted 9/23/2006 1:10:33 PM | show profile I did But it looks a little dated. Especially for the companies I'm looking at. Thanks though! |
| mailbag | Posted 9/23/2006 1:24:27 PM | show profile | email poster Were you offered a salary range, is that why you are asking? I wish this topic was discussed more often, so I appreciate you asking. I can say this much -- there was an editorial position open for a national consumer magazine in the city (international company) for which I applied. Made it to final round where we discussed salary. As I have a job I will only consider one at higher rate than I make today - so I said mid-$60s. A week later, the editor called (not e-mail.) She said she really wanted me, but they went through a major salary reduction and layoff reorg. I asked her - how much was the job paying? She said the best they could offer was high-$20s, and she regretted having to hire the one who accepted because that candidate did not have the skills she needed but was will to take the salary. I thanked her for being so frank. Would be very interesting to see others post figures here -- I do not trust salary surveys. |
| lise2177 | Posted 9/23/2006 2:16:58 PM | show profile im an associate editor at a consumer mag at a major publishing company, and i make 47k after a year (was hired at 45k). when i was going through the hiring process i asked for 50k and was told they 'couldn't" do it. i feel that i work very hard and fairly long hours (for a womans mag) for a pay that isn't good enough. i think there's a wide salary range for associates depending on what title and company you're with, previous salary and negotiating skills. it also seems that the nature of editorial is to not be well-compensated, and that's starting to make me reconsider the career path i'm on. considering how stressful and intense editorial can be, to be getting paid 47k (in nyc, no less) can make you wonder why you're doing it. |
| wwb | Posted 9/25/2006 11:52:06 AM | show profile Thank you! That at least gives me an idea of what to expect. I agree, the hours don't seem to match up with the pay in this field, especially when you're living in one of the world's most expensive cities. I guess you can only hope it gets better as you work your way up the corporate ladder. Entry- and mid-level positions in the mag industry seem to pay atrociously. |
| pleiades | Posted 9/25/2006 12:00:45 PM | show profile It's bad everywhere. My salary as an associate editor at a national consumer magazine located in the Midwest was between $25,000 and $28,000. Ouch. |
| Venus | Posted 9/25/2006 4:43:01 PM | show profile I was an associate editor at a national magazine about an hour from NYC and got paid $35K...So I think the range is fairly big. |
