| more food | Posted 10/19/2006 4:24:49 PM | show profile Has anyone ever successfully pitched a feature to the NYT Magazine? It just seems like a really, really hard publication to break into. |
| abel tasman | Posted 10/22/2006 10:29:37 PM | show profile Word on the street is, even if you do break in, you've got at least a 50% chance of having your feature killed. Maybe worse. Ick. |
| Lotus665 | Posted 10/23/2006 9:28:09 AM | show profile Also heard of being commonly asked to do many, many rewrites. Many. |
| nellie bly | Posted 10/23/2006 10:28:07 AM | show profile this week's magazine has an feature (the one about a scientist who fabricated data) with the bio note: "Jeneen Interlandi is a writer living in New York. This is her first article for the magazine." So it's not impossible. It's sort of like winning a lottery (what luck!) and then having to run several marathons (those rewrites). How often does a first-timer break in? I probably wouldn't have noticed this bio note when I read the article if I hadn't already read this post. In this case, perhaps they were looking for more science writers/articles. If a writer has training/expertise in a particular area, it certainly helps. |
| df | Posted 10/23/2006 3:37:48 PM | show profile I have placed several stories for my clients - I pitched as a pr person - FYI. Everyone I ever dealt with at the NYT was very knowledgeable and nice. I have dealt with many different departments from biz to home to food and this is from my point of view the commonality: give very very detailed info about topic and approach and make sure you really know what you are talking about and have the whole story mapped out. If it fits, is interesting, NEW and the editor likes it, it is a go. |
| abel tasman | Posted 10/23/2006 3:51:37 PM | show profile Mag is an entity in and of itself. I guess all the depts there are to a degree, but the magazine really is a thing apart. Writing for the paper and writing for the magazine are wildly disparate accomplishments. There are just so many more opportunities at the paper. I imagine quite a number of people on this board have written for the Times, but few to none will have written for the mag. So, I guess what I'm saying is, what's good for the goose (paper) is not necessarily good enough for the gander (magazine). |
