Hello, can anyone recommend a reputable career counselor in Manhattan? I am seeking a career change from ad sales into SOMETHING ELSE, I do not know what. I guess you could say that I'm at mid-career level.

I also can't go TOO expensive, so someone under $100 per session would be best.

Thank you!

Do career counselors really help?
Has anyone had success with career counselors?

Homework before seeing a career counselor
Before you shell out THOUSANDS of dollars to possibly lose yourself while finding yourself, try doing some soul searching on your own first. Otherwise, you could waste lots of money because you're thinking generally "I just want SOMETHING ELSE." You need a clue to what it is first.

Try some books first. Each of these come at the career question from a different angle and offer exercises to try and help you.

1. I don't know what I want but I know it's not this by Julie Jansen

2. Now, discover your strengths by marcus buckingham and donald clifton

3. How to find the work you love, byt laurence boldt

And, of course:

4. Do what you are
5. What color is your parachute?

Figure out what you value, what other aptitude you have beside for selling, interests, temperament, learning style, and any special considerations (do you HAVE to work from home, or do you love to travel.)

Hope this helps.

swim with other career searchers
Also, swim with other career searchers. In Manhattan I'd imagine there are at least 20 career search groups. So, you wouldn't be entirely on your own. I'm just concerned about the $100/session price tag for a career counselor. You can't get a refund, even if the counselor doesn't get you to your desired goal.

Maybe you could try a life coach? In my experience, they are really helpful in enabling you to discover what you want to do and then planning the steps to get there. I would highly recommend a UK life coach called Katie Harvey, who has plenty of experience and qualifications in coaching on all areas including careers, relationships and happiness. She is well-respected and contributes to magazines such as Cosmopolitan. She may be over your budget but may know of other life coaches who may be cheaper. Her website is www.katieharveycoaching.co.uk and her email is katie@katieharveycoaching.co.uk. Hope that helps!
