Someone asked me to post this on her behalf. I have no dealings with Bucks personally, but I do personally know of several writers who have been stiffed by the magazine with Andrew Cantor claiming to be poor:

Andrew Cantor and company at Bucks Magazine in New Hope (where I live) has a history of stiffing writers. Well, he's launched a glossy new magazine, and that launch is featured in an article in today's (1/28/07) Philadelphia Inquirer in the "Local News" section.

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/16561171.htm

I don't know for how long people will be able to access the content online but the writer's email is .

More importantly, I think that writers should send a letter to the editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer to express their disgust that while the article talks about magazines like Cantor's new Mainline magazine covering the rich and their lifestyles, he can't even pay the writers who have covered the rich and their lifestyles in his other magazine, Bucks.

it's so ironic that publishers who have a history of stiffing writers and others manage to get glowing write-ups in local newspapers. writers who have been screwed by said publishers really should contact and provide info to the reporter at those papers to do a followup piece. another current thread--the one on freshwater publishing-- is a similar situation. Don't you think the reporter would be interested in the real story?

Reporters
The reporter has been contacted about this story by several people, though she hasn't made clear whether or not she'll be following up on the story.

If you have also been stiffed by this magazine, please contact me. I know of another outlet following up on this story.

As someone who used to work on the inside, I can share many stories beyond what's mentioned above. However without wanting to reveal too much, I can back up the OP 100% by saying they continue to promise to pay writers money they simply don't have.

This is sad but this kind of stuff happens all the time. There was a group who published a magazine called Millionaire that couldn't/didn't pay their writers (ironic, huh?) and also a publisher in Scottsdale or Phoenix who published a magazine called Tycoon who left vendors and writers and staff hanging out to dry and is now publishing another luxury magazine. Does anyone remember a magazine called Lux? What about PrivateAir? Or, my personal favorite, Trump Life, a luxury magazine based on Donald Trump. What would be interesting about this particular new launch is to find out who is funding it and printing it. Printers always know who pays their bills and who does'nt!

I'm always mystified how startups almost never seem to anticipate their operating costs and don't have enough money IN HAND to make assignments they know they can pay for.

They always seem to assume they will attract enough advertising from high-end companies that want to reach their filthy rich audience, and the writers, artists etc. always seem to bear the brunt of the risk they take when they don't sell these ads, or the buyers don't pay on time.

I guess I'm naive but I thought when you started up a business you saved or borrowed enough money to meet your basic monthly operating budget. Silly me!

I, too, am still trying to collect what's due--and this is after going to court. It's very frustrating when we work so hard to produce content and then can't get paid.

Out of curiousity, who would write for this new magazine? Philadelphia has a pretty small magazine community. And when is that City Paper article going to publish?

BUCKS Magazine
This is totally unfair. Though it is not public knowledge, BUCKS magazine hit a desperate financial situation when one of the partners abrubtly left over 1 year ago. This left Cantor and company with two options; go bankrupt and stiff all, or try to work through it and pay all. After much discussion Cantor and crew decided to stick to it and pay everyone back. Though they were advised to go the bankruptcy route (it would have been easier) due to the personal, financial harm this would cause, they still worked to try to pay all past debt. To date they have paid over 70% of that debt off and are working hard to get all caught up.
Maybe you should get the factcs straight before condeming someone who is actually on your side. and doing the right thing.
