I'm thinking of switching to Verizon DSL. How is the service, software and tech support? I'm in NYC and have my land line with Verizon, but I can save money by switching my internet and cellphone to Verizon, too. They said the bundle (called Triple Freedom) is $94.99 plus taxes. Tech support people are in Texas & India. I don't know anyone with a Verizon email address, so I guess it's not a popular choice.

any other cost saving ideas. I'm kind of stuck with my land line for DSL because I don't have cable tv installed and my cellphone reception is iffy at this location. Hope to get a new cell/service that will work though...

I would always go with cable over DSL in NYC, because the speed compared to what you pay makes it a much better value. Even if you don't have cable installed, getting it installed is pretty easy.

Cell service works, but it won't be anywhere near as fast as what you can expect with either cable or DSL. It's a good option for people who need access on the go or have no other alternative, but even Verizon's Broadband Access doesn't feel like conventional broadband.

I was just looking up the cost of Roadrunner broadband, which is offering a really low intro price. When I put in my street address and zip for availability of service (not just the intro offer) I got the message- it appears your area is not serviced by Time Warner at this time. That's weird because I know someone in my building who has roadrunner. When I tried to get it a couple of years ago, they never got back to me to set up an install date, so I just wonder whats up wih them?
I live downtown so its not like I'm in an out of the way area.

I have Verizon dsl in NJ
I have to say I've been pretty happy with it. The $ amount sounds good - I'm paying that for dsl and landline now.

Last week my (admittedly ancient) laptop crashed and died. Tech support was AWESOME. Talked me through what could be the problem, gave some good suggestions on fixing it, advised me against using their own virus protection (reccommended Norton instead) and then walked me thru setting up my (even more ancient) Mac so that I could use it til the laptop was fixed.

The guy was nice and funny too. I was almost crying with frusteration when I started and ended up laughing.

Just curious; what's the deal on the cell phone minutes? I have 6 mo left on my t-mobile contract but would switch to verizon if the deal was good.

I live in Westchester and have DSL with Verizon (and cell & land line). It's perfectly fine, and fast?in fact whenever I've used cable on someone else's computer it didn't seem any faster to me.

Yes, the tech guys are in India but they are helpful. Now
I gotta check out that thing you mentioned Triple Freedom because I also have my land and cell with them.

Also, you can have Verizon DSL and use another email
address. I carried over my old AOL addy, ( for free)
even tho I also received a Verzion addy.

thanks everyone! It's good to know you're happy with the service. I found someone in my bldg who has it and is satisfied, except for the usual complaints about how long it takes to get tech help on the phone.

What I just can't fathom about Verizon is why everyone uses msn email (an extra $10 to msn, my neighbor said) or why they let you keep your aol address, or why aol lets you keep it for that matter. Doesn't Verizon have its own email--or is it so buggy that people opt out. I have earthlink dsl now and no complaints. Just trying to save some $$.

I found a very well organized website called dslreports.com that has reviews by users of just about every dsl and cable service in the country. Re Verizon, the people who have Verizon FIOS (not available in my NYC nabe yet) are happy campers compared to those with just regular old DSL, who seem to have a lot of complaints. The comments are that Verizon is putting all their energy into developing the FIOS system. Of course I realize people who have complaints are more likely to post there, I guess.

why should verizon care if I carry over another email
address? I'm still paying for their DSL service whether
I use their email addy or not.

the reason I kept my old addy was because it's on my website and biz cards, had nothing to do with Verizon.

Village Gal- well that's just one reason I was initially reluctant to switch from earthlink to verizon. My understanding is I'd have to give up my email addresses because I'd no longer be an earthlink customer. why should they let me keep it from free? That's what I dont understand why aol lets someone keep their old addy--are you paying them something for using this service? I certainly don't want to have to pay extra when I'm trying to reduce my bill

Of course I have a yahoo webmail address, too as a backup. But I don't like to use a free (ie yahoo, hotmail, gmail) webmail account as my primary business email address.

I'm in Philly, I have Verizon DSL, and it is plenty fast for me. If I were online all day viewing large streaming video files, I'd probably have opted for Comcast instead. But I don't notice the speed at all, so it's fine for me.

I haven't needed tech support, really. They are pretty good about keeping you up to date with phone calls and/or e-mails during the setup process. I think just once (in two years) my modem needed to be reset. I just read their online help, turned it on and off, and then re-set some of the settings through a Web interface Verizon provides.

As for e-mail addresses, I think we are past the point where when people get an new Internet service provider they're going to switch their e-mail address. I have a Verizon e-mail address and it works fine, but why would I switch my main e-mail address now? I've used the same e-mail address since before Verizon even offered DSL. I'm sure this is a reason with others, too, and why you don't see Verizon e-mail addresses everywhere. I actually see it as an advantage to not have my e-mail address tied to my service provider.

Bad news
I had it for a year and hated it (had to wait until the contract was up.) Despite their filters, it created a "shushing" sound on my phone that caused me to have to ask people to speak up. I have a cable modem now and am much happier. Verizon also has a bad reputation as a company - poor treatment of employees and legal attempts to block other companies from starting similar businesses in their markets.

Nellie, I have no idea why AOL allows this and I no longer pay a fee either, altho I did at the beginning. Now it's free.
nellie bly Posted – 2/8/2007 2:34:01 PM | show profile
who knows, perhaps aol lets you keep the address for "free" hoping that you'll come back to them? a certain percentage of people may do that if all is not rosy up with their new ISP

We tried Verizon DSL (in NYC) a few years ago as an addition to a Verizon land line and found that the service failed every time it rained hard.

Went back to RR Cable just before 9-11. Which allowed us to be in touch with the outside world via email when everybody's phones were out or kluged.

Lesson - not putting all your communication eggs in one basket. If communications is your lifeblood. Now have the highspeed on the cable, plus a landline which also served as a handy backup when NY had those big black outs and electricity was out for a day or so.

I have to say the TV ads for Verizon FIOS are very compelling. wish they offered it in NYC....
