Let's put our heads together and see what we come up with:

I am a writer (a print reporter) who would like to try my hand at copywriting, and if I like it, then try to get into advertising or marketing.

You are an up-and-coming would-be, art director -- who would like to collaborate with me on a portfolio.

What I don't have in training and experience, I make up for with a natural facility for language and a knack for creative ideas (if I don't say so, myself). Don't let this hastily-constructed ad dissuade you : )
