| eye2eye | Posted 2/27/2007 2:44:05 PM | show profile Everyone says that 85% of jobs are found through networking...so how do you network if you don't know lots of people or, if all the people you know can't really help you land something or provide meaningful introductions? I realize that one method is going to industry events....also MB etc. I'm in the TV industry and I find it super hard to network. Any tips appreciated. |

Wherever you are, there's sure to be a NATAS chapter you can hook up with. But for someone who doesn't know a lot of people, you'll have to work at identifiying your built-in networks. Start with your ethnicity, gender (men in television organizations), alumni associations (college AND high school if you went to a larger/older one). Neighborhood associations, nonprofit volunteer opportunities, community education. Sports, hobbies, etc. When you think of a network, don't think of people you know in your industry, think of everyone you know and work outwards from there. I guarantee when you say you're looking for a job in TV (or whatever), people love to say "I have a friend who works for XYX," and can put you in touch with them. |
