Women are still put in their "appropriate" roles in the Christian faith. If it weren't for the liberal tradition in Christianity it would be far worse. Again: you cannot dismiss the similarities because they're both ABRAHAMIC faiths. In fact the Quran borrows a lot of it's stuff from not only the Old Testament but also the New Testament makes dismissing any similarities pretty much preposterous. Interesting you point out Mindanao. Those people are Muslims or the same reason so many Zapatistas are converting to Protestantism (away from Catholicism, the faith oftheir oppressors): it's a political movement as much as a religious one. It's in Manila's interest to perpetuate the myth that it's all about religious struggle. The truth of the matter is that everywhere you see Islam thriving in the Philippines you find the poorest and most historically marginalizedpeople. You cannot assign blame to either religion for the conflicts in Mindanao -- the marginalized often align themselves with a faith different than the ones of their perceived oppressors. Again, agree that Christianity is more liberal than Islam, but there are a lot of moral similarities that bleed over onto polticial policies (such as abstinence only education, defunding groups that promote condoms, religious evangelical organizations that use charity as an excuse to preach, banning a woman's right to determine what she does with her own body by assigning a fetus the same rights as a human being, and a push toward religion in politics.) Yeah, I know Christians blanch and get pissed when people point out that they have more in common with Muslims than they care to think, but these similarities are undeniable even if in this day and age there is a greater number of people willing to blow themselves up in the name of God. PS: I said it before I'll say it again: "Collateral Damage" IS TERRORISM. And once you get that into your God-fearing head and start counting bodies you will find that collateral damage has murdered far more human beings than Islamic terrorism has. The death of 6,500 Americans (including the 9/11caualties) pales in comparison to the 75,000 reported deaths in Iraq sinc ethe war started. (Notice I'm not deferring to the maximum estimated death toll in Iraq here for the sake of NOT HAVING TO.) So spare me the sanctimony that Islam is a more brutal religion when the self-avowed Born Again president who was put into office by evangelical Americans has invaded and occupied another ocuntry in a war that has killed AT LEAST ten times the number of American casualties since 9/11. |

That is exactly what textbooks in Saudi Arabia teach: creationism as a science. Anyone who thinks creationism is a science needs to look up the word "dogma" in the dictionary and compare that definition to the definition of the scientific process. Very short summary: Dogma = a statement that can neither be proven nor disproven. Scientific theory: a statement than can be disproven. See the diff? People wwho advocate creation "science" in Kansas aren't any different than the mullah that do the same in the Magic Kingdom. Huzzah, baby. |
