| Quatermain | Posted 3/5/2008 11:43:05 PM | show profile Avenir, White Digital Media, Say One Media Never heard of Avenir, but White Digital Media is owned by the former owner of Conquest Business Media, by the name of Glen White, who used to be in business with Schofield. White sagely purchased litigation insurance, making it near impossible to sue him, and there are those that have tried. Say One used to be Conquest Business Media, and is owned by two British guys named Henry Anson and Nick Hussey. They stiffed their printer for about $300,000 before "restructuring," and stiffed the management staff of an agreed-to three months of severance. Nicholas Hussey went so far as to write expense checks incorrectly so they couldn't be cashed. Tempting as it is to work for this type of publication, thinking it'll be a big break into publishing, it's hardly worth it. As I found out and someone said earlier in this string, it makes it difficult to get hired elsewhere. |
| Beethoven | Posted 3/6/2008 4:22:12 AM | show profile Hizzonner I'd love for you to actually answer a question though, did you work for Conquest;you seem to be down on the company but you don't seem willing to declare why.I do know,as I mentioned, that they sacked at least three of their editors, were you perhaps one? Is it perhaps animosity because of past treatment rather than a genuine dislike of advertorials that leads you to decry these publishers? I merely ask the question! |
| gnarstar911 | Posted 3/12/2008 3:21:18 PM | show profile | email poster schofield After reading the chat I didnt go there but I need to make some money and from what I hear people are definately still making momey over there. I am reconsidering going to work for them but I have a couple of questions. I dont understand how these sales are made. What is the pitch? What things do they say to overcome objections? What is the avarege sale worth 2K 3K? What is the close rate on these leads? ALso, what is the most profitable mag for me to try and work for (i.e.e construction Today, Food and Drink etc)? |
| Quatermain | Posted 3/12/2008 9:25:52 PM | show profile Yep I worked for Conquest - nope, I wasn't one of the editors they canned, and you work for "profile" publications at your own peril - you'll get printed, you'll get paid (unless you work for Say One) - but there is little prestige to it, and little visibility. Reed Business, CMP and the like look far better on the resume. Luck to you. |
| writer1616 | Posted 4/17/2008 11:50:25 PM | show profile just a few comments I just wanted to add a few comments to this thread - I had the opportunity to work at Schofield for over two years, which had it good points and bad. Yes they drive hard but for the people that can actual sell - you make money. I watched people come and go - mostly go and hear them complain about not making money or ' too much pressure'. My answer - quit crying and get to work. I spoke with people from other divisions and they have the same issues there - some people are good at the job and some are not. The ones that complain are the folks not meeting their numbers and not making the bonuses/rewards. Is Andrew making money - YES - should we expect him to work for free? Complaining about the owner of a company turning a profit is just ridiculous. I made a lot of cash while I was there ? and left on good terms. I am pursuing something outside of Schofield right now but I know the door would be open for me to return. I feel confident that Schofield Media will be around for a while ? they do reinvest in the company and find ways to make the business grow. I will go back and ride on Andrew?s magic carpet if my path goes that way and if part of my working there means Andrew makes money than so be it ? I know I will be cashing in as well. I also have the knowledge of knowing folks that worked at the ?competing? business ? Conquest Business Media. Those guys were getting screwed by Glen White long before he dumped the company. I would worry about his new venture ? White Digital Media ? a guy like that won?t change. He does have balls though?. Here he makes the deal to those two poor bastards Anson and Hussey ? over inflated books and all. Signs the standard non-compete for industry. Straight away goes out and starts up a new company publishing the same types of books?.. and they can not touch him because of the litigation insurance. Big brass balls ? someone is gonna bust them sooner or later. Bottom line. If you?re on the fence about Schofield try it out. Worst case you will make some base, some commission and make some money for the company. Beside there are a lot of hot chicks working there. There is one person in the Chicago office selling over a million a year in ads ? and has done it for a few years in a row. Obviously something is working over there?. Stay away from the others ? you should go ahead and interview ? just compare the benefits packages and you will see who is putting back into the company and its staff. Thanks for the time |
| kolbsy | Posted 4/25/2008 12:45:42 PM | show profile considering employment @ schofield i have an interview there for a sales position. bottom line is i don't mind inside sales, selling on the phone all day. i just want to make money. i make about 40k now and would like to make around 50-60 for the first year. is this possible at this company? from a previous poster doesnt sound like it, he said he made around 30k which would not be enough for me. can any former employees let me know how much they made? |
| alim20 | Posted 6/10/2008 7:06:57 PM | show profile | email poster Leaving Schofield Was a Dumb Decision Schofield Media is the last stable good paying job I have had now since resigning from the company last year in March. I left over reasons I now admit are petty and stupid and clearly proof of my lower intelligence and lack of vision and faith. While I was employed at schofield I never could rest at night thinking about the ruthless capitalistic genius of Andrew Schofield. Everynight I kept saying to myself this british dude turned 10,000 into 40 million in less than 5 years. He bleeds red just like me so why can't I do what he did? I envied his success and grew jealous that a man could apply his time and energy and human creative powers to build something so profitable and my share of his estate was a petty 30000 a year plus maybe 1200 a month in extra commissions. Every month I would look at my total sales 34000 and say to myself I am getting only 3000 of that and this lucky bastard is getting THE REST. I lost perspective on life and how I was supposed to learn from Schofield the basics of business so that maybe some time in the future I too could start a business and duplicate Schofields tactics. I complained to myself about how 30000 a year was low pay, but did I ask myself how much does schofield pay on raw materials for fine paper, 200 plus editorial and sales staff, computers equipment, taxes, and how much does he lose every year paying inferior sales people like myself who did not come to work and put in an honest days effort because 40% of the time I was calculating other peoples commission the moment they put a sale for 14000 on the board. I could go on but it is point less. I am reading think and grow rich and in that book it talks about how luck can have a lot to do with a man's success and I think failing to maximize my expereince with this future titan of publishing proves I failed to take advantage of the luck god gave me when I was hired with little expereince. Since I have left I have started and ran my own somewhat shady business where I still make the same money but there is not one minute of the day I sit in a comfy chair and waste time and still can say I am making money. Every minute I am working to the point of exhaustion, every sale is critical, the stress spoiled CEO's would give me over the phone at Schofield is nothing compared to coming home each night thankful to god I was not arrested or robbed at gunpoint during my latest workday grinding away on the tough streets of Chicago. Schofield was an easy 30k an easy 45k had I just put my nose down and focused on the task at hand. If I had to be critical of anything its that I would of appreciated my time there more if only we got more chances to hear from Andrew Schofield in person. Chris Schofield barely spoke to us and employed managers who were more like dictators then inspiring life changing leaders. Hard to be motivated when your manager only advises you to make 160 calls a day instead of 140 calls. All my life I have been drawn to charismatic leaders who give rousing speeches and push me directly to seize my potential. Schofields genius is he really is making money and he does not have to interact with the worker ants like that and the truth is its not worth his time. I was easily replacable and the ruthless fact of all is that 30k base salary was generous considering their training program could take a ditch digger and teach him how to create the sales numbers I arrogantly assumed only I could bring the company. I have to learn from my past because of this experience I will need to recognize the difference between a job with no future and job of a lifetime. I dont know if have learned my lesson really because they took me back 2 times and really the way my brain works if they gave me 5 more chances would I really commit to working there the first month I get that commission check for a 100k sales month? What new business would I foolishly think sounds good with 5k in startup capital from schofield?lol My first month I was number on in sales and the commission check was screaming at me TO START MY OWN BUSINESS, just one check made me psycho and nuts thinking I could last on my own. Why can't I just focus in life and set a goal to get 100 big commission checks and then leave a company? So guys I am Alim and I wrote that honest critiqe of the company above, take it from me a worthless critic who is living day to day now IN REGRET, you don't leave a growing company revolutionizing publishing all because your jealous the CEO is making 90% and giving you 10%. Because in the end I am getting 100% commission now and NO Magazine being published today is planning to put me on the front page for my street smarts and entreprenuerial genius. Should of stayed longer and learned from an expert instead of promoting myself to CEO after 7 months on the job. If any of my previous post harmed Schofields image and resulted in any bad ideas about the company I am sorry. |
| alim20 | Posted 6/10/2008 10:16:45 PM | show profile | email poster What is Schofield Media? What is Schofield Media Schofield Media is Mcdonalds, Google, Microsoft, name a US company personifying the American dream and you know what the company is. I took a risk that I could be better off trying to do what the CEO did from scratch and have failed miserably. Just as tobacco products and fancy new presribed medications often have warning labels and disclaimers for idiots foolish enough to consume or try their products, I think too much reading and focus on self help anthony robbins type mumbo jumbo and bold attempts at entreprenuerism without reading the disclaimers of reality showcasing the horror stories from failed attempts at building empire gave me a false impression of how easy it would be to survive on my own. If your about to quit your day job David to compete with the googles, microsofts, mcdonalds of the world, do yourself a favor and don't start your impossible crusade with 5 hard stones of big balls and funds earned from a couple big commission checks from Goliath. I thought the Iraqi's were stupid to resist the US then one day I woke up got my own taste of the shock and awe asswhiping you get when you try to compete with the real hustlers of greenbacks. Saddaam went from the palace to the dirt hole and I went from nice posh apartments to slum lords house across the street from crack dealers. |
