| baloney2 | Posted 4/10/2007 5:34:26 PM | show profile Does anybody know of any journalism programs in the Wash DC area that specialize in *magazine* writing/editing/publishing? Either that, or some type of continuing education course or certificate that would give me credentials specifically in writing for magazines? I have several years of experience as in in-house editor for a book publisher, but I'm beginning to realize that basic writing skills aren't going to cut it if I want to move into magazines: I need connections and educational credentials. |

It's pretty competitive, but their online profile makes it sound amazing: http://journalism.nyu.edu/prospectivestudents/coursesofstudy/magazine/ As a DC resident who scoured the market for such a thing, I assure you, a brief stint in New York (or perhaps LA) may be essential. The industry is really anchored in those cities. Most DC-based magazine people either start in one of those cities, or they get their foot in the door at The Atlantic or some such publication, which, you can imagine, is pretty damn competitive in its own right. Also, NYU has a certificate-bearing summer publishing course, kind of like the one at Columbia, "The Columbia Publishing Course." In short, Columbia's is more books, and NYU's is more about magazines. |

This is late, but GW has a masters in publishing program that may help as well as American's Interactive Journalism program may be a good place to look. There are also online courses offered by Prince George's Community College, but I don't have any feedback about them. |

When I spent 2 months at the Washington Post, I found that most of the people working in production had this certificate. Good luck! |
