Yesterday, I e-mailed an FOB to a top health pub. The editor got back within minutes, and this is what she said:

This is good, but unfortunately we are paused in our submission acceptance. Can you check back with us in a couple of months? Re-submit it? Thanks.

I do get what she says, but this reply kinda rang a n alarm bell inside me. This is April, and the spring break at U.S. universities is about to begin. Do the eds too go on a vacation at this time? I don't live in the United States, and I really don't know anything about this. Please enlighten me!

If that is true, then I guess, it would be a waste of time to pitch queries. The query would get buried under heaps of corporate e-mail and spam, and would probably never get read -- especially if it's from an unknown writer.

Thanks!

From the sound of that message, it doesn't sound like this has anything to do with vacation. It sounds as if they are over-inundated with queries and/or their issues are booked up for a very long time.

And actually, most college spring breaks are in March. Elementary, middle and high school springs breaks are around this time, though, usually. But like I said, I really doubt vacation has anything to do with the reply you received.

That's fine, but I wanted to know if this is a good time to be pitching to mags or not.

I don't think it's any different than any other time. I don't think a one-week vacation (which most people would have taken last week, by the way, for Easter) is going to have any real consequence.

What Mag Girl said. Good luck! Also, might try pitching it somewhere else. If this one's interested, someone else be -- and you don't have a sure gig there.

Agree with Mag Girl too. Doesn't sound like vacation, sounds like perhaps a few issues where they didn't sell enough ads, so inventory is suddenly full, and a break from new assignments unless a pitch is really compelling and can't wait. Happens. Anyway, that's my guess.

I agree with the above posters, and spring vacation is over.
