How long after sending it in is it safe to start sending out the chapters to potential agents (and hopefully soon, publishers)? A lawyer told me that it takes up to six months to receive confirmation from the copyright office, but only after a days of submitting the chapters/TX form/payment, it's ok to start sending out sample chapters (since they'll have record of it being received)... |
| maphop | Posted 4/13/2007 10:07:16 AM | show profile Did you send it certified or an another fashion where you can show proof of ship date or receipt date? If not, I'd say wait until your check clears (a sure sign that the package was received and being processed) and then you're fine. |

| gregp22 | Posted 4/13/2007 10:57:53 PM | show profile does anyone know though how long it takes for the copyright office to cash a check? i sent it almost 2 weeks ago, and the check still hasn't been cashed... |
| Village Gal | Posted 4/14/2007 11:10:29 AM | show profile why? I am curious why you are doing this. Do you actually think that a reputable publisher or agent will steal your work? Just wondering. According to Jeff Herman's guidebook, "the rights to literary properties reside in the author from the time the work is produced regardless of whether a formal copyright is obtained." |
