Hi everyone-

I've been in journalism and corporate communications for about ten years now and I'm interested in honing my copywriting skills and also learning more about proposal writing so that I can pursue these things as a freelancer on the side.

Can anyone recommend good copywriting courses, seminars, or online classes? Everything I get by searching online seems to be very hokey...

Thanks!

re: copywriting education
unless you're big-time serious or have a wicked huge trust fund, i wouldn't suggest going the portfolio school route. if you do, there are a handful of very good programs out there that will take about two years to complete.

if you have the communications skills already in place, hook up with a skilled art director, get your hands on "hey whipple, squeeze this", "cutting edge advertising" and as many strategy books you can find.

depending on your market, freelance copywriting is a tough nut to crack and you got to really want it. if you do, good luck and have fun.
