I'm currently "freelancing" through an executive search firm for a small non-profit. I may have some bigger clients coming through on the side without a middle man. I'm thinking of leaving this project but the executive search requires 2 weeks notice. Can they do that? Can a temp agency require a "freelancer" to give two weeks notice?

Do you have a signed agreement requiring that? If not, then I wouldn't worry that much about it. The two-week notice period became customary for a variety of reasons, but even that's not contractually required in most cases.

The real question is whether you want to stay in good with the executive search firm. If your agreement says you need to give two weeks notice, and you don't, they could be ticked off and never work with you again. If you don't care about that, and just quit without notice, it's seem unlikely there would be any consequence.
