Hi,
I'm a writer who is brand new to the PR game. Any thoughts on how much to charge a government agency for two fact-filled press releases about an event that involves launches of several products/ initiatives? Thanks.

Charge by the hour
Don't charge by the press release. Make sure you are getting an hourly rate, especially if you are going to be pitching your own release. What is a good hourly rate? Maybe you can get an idea of rates from posters in this thread.

Thanks. Another topic - Is it a hard-and-fast rule that press releases should stick to one page, especially when the information being given is (honestly) quirky, colorful and interesting?

No. Actually, I've never even heard the one-page rule. It's obsolete now that most press releases go over the wire and over e-mail. A press release should be succinct, but also long enough to convey what you need to convey. Length isn't as important as content.

Hi Foreigner, go to PRNewswire.com and up at the top click "Industries". Then click "government". Looking over these press releases might give you a better idea of standard length, amount of details etc for a government related press release. Good luck!

Thanks, guys! I went with my instincts, did a lot of research and pulled the best parts together into a three or four page release/ fact sheet and accompanied it with great photos. It's a cause I really believe in, so I really put a lot into it. Now comes the part where you have to pitch it around - as a journo I know how difficult journos can be to pitch to!
