I will be moving to the DC area this summer and, as I know very little about the publishing scene there, are there any suggestions on where to begin learning?

I hear DC is very freelance friendly, and I am aware of Avant Guild's networking parties, but that's it. What organizations are worth joining, where do people network, what kinds of jobs are out there, etc., etc.

I've worked as a freelance writer and editor the past two years, but previously worked FT in the publications dept. of a nonprofit. Right now, I just want to explore my options and learn what's what in DC. , both freelance and on staff. I'm particularly interested in networking once I'm in town.

Any information w/b greatly appreciated - I'm really looking forward to this move.
