I'm a magazine journalism major graduating from Syracuse University and moving to D.C. -- without a job lined up. Does anyone have advice on good publications to look into for editorial assistant/entry-level positions? I'm not interested in the bigger names like The Washingtonian and The Atlantic, but smaller publications where I'll really have an opportunity to work hands-on with the magazine. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

there aren't
many smaller than the ones you named but Charlie Peters, a noted West Virginia character, has been taking on people at the Washington Monthly since the 80s, also, the New Republic seems to go through people fairly readily. There's a new fashion magazine here, DC Style, which seems to do food and the local scene a couple times a year and also, Fairchild Publications that runs W and Women's Wear Daily used to have an office here. No offense, but anything's better than Buffalo and it really does help to be here in order to get something, if you really want to be here.

the last poster doesn't have a great handle on the scene here. DC Style went out of business and DC Magazine is a high-end style monthly doing v. well that has a small staff but a lot of great pages to fill. I should know. I'm the editor. Feel free to contact me at kshalett@modernluxury.com.
