| UGoGirl | Posted 5/10/2007 11:27:45 AM | show profile Texas is so out of touch with reality. Their solution to gasoline shortages? Make it cheaper. Isn't there some kind of prize that goes out to elected leaders who come up with really really really stupid ideas? They really don't deserve to be part of the good old U.S. of A. *** House favors gas tax break Legislature: Prices would drop 20 cents for 3 months; Senate may not be receptive 01:13 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 By JAKE BATSELL / The Dallas Morning News jbatsell@dallasnews.com Gas prices are climbing, but the Texas House wants to make your summer road trip a little cheaper. House members gave a preliminary blessing Tuesday to a three-month break from the 20-cent-per-gallon state gas tax, aiming to ease the pain during the summer driving season. Dallas News |
| mailbag | Posted 5/10/2007 11:16:55 PM | show profile | email poster As is typical in Texas.... let's see I lived there for a total of 10 years... is just what this article stated. Make it appear as though tax payers are getting a break. That lost revenue will come from somewhere else though. They have laughably hight property taxes already (big deal there is no state income tax, owning a home more than makes up for that little income perk.) |
| seeattleme | Posted 5/11/2007 1:20:36 AM | show profile And just when we were thinking of relocating the family to Austin! screw that. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/11/2007 5:31:30 AM | show profile All things considered, housing is still very reasonably priced in Texas. Rant away, though. Sure, the gas thing is silly. At least they're trying ... |
| UGoGirl | Posted 5/11/2007 9:27:44 AM | show profile Actually I've heard Austin is pretty wonderful, a liberal enclave in a sea of red. Writesonwater, when you say they're trying, do you mean they're trying to hang themselves? There are so many reasons for the price of gas to go up, time to face the music. Cheap gas isn't an American right. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/11/2007 2:33:45 PM | show profile I do think Austin's great for those and other reasons, Ugo. San Antonio's cool too -- and parts of the Hill Country. Actually, there are some neat spots in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex that have their charms -- McKinney and Waxahachie, for example. Ugo, I'm sure you're right about the reasons for gas to be high. I do weary of paying up at the pump -- which is another reason to be glad I work at home. |
| Stanley_Milgram | Posted 5/11/2007 5:17:21 PM | show profile Austin's only slightly less boring than the rest of texas. San Antonio is a joke, though the missions have a little charm. The thing I love about Texas is that it's mediocre in every way you'd want to look at it -- topographically, culturally, you name it -- but they all compensate by making everything bigger and are determined to kick the ass of anyone who points this out. Galveston's not too bad but I'd still hate to live there. |
| seeattleme | Posted 5/11/2007 7:36:01 PM | show profile Their monthly magazine sure kicks ass, though. |
| zorro_the_good | Posted 5/14/2007 10:53:10 AM | show profile *That's* your reason for "cutting off" Texas? Because a bunch of politicians are in full-pander mode? If that's the standard, we'd have to expel all 50 states. You want a good reason to shun Texas? How about this: http://www.calpundit.com/archives/002380.html |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 5/14/2007 12:35:17 PM | show profile I heard Austin is supposed to be a great city |
| UGoGirl | Posted 5/14/2007 9:43:52 PM | show profile zorro too true. At any rate they have a good chunk of our oil refineries, so I think we're stuck with them. For a while anyway. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/15/2007 12:07:13 AM | show profile Not to mention the Barnett Shale. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/15/2007 12:08:40 AM | show profile So we produced the Shrub and Smoky Joe Barton. Every nose has a few zits now and then. You wouldn't cut off your nose to spite your face, would you? |
| Bleak Spouse | Posted 5/15/2007 12:13:06 AM | show profile i wish someone would speak up for austin and tell 'em to screw off. |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/15/2007 12:31:30 AM | show profile I know. Me too. |
| theroaringgirl | Posted 5/15/2007 2:45:11 AM | show profile writeronthewater: To be fair Texas did not produce Shrub. I believe Connecticut did. which may explain Lieberman... |
| writesonwater | Posted 5/15/2007 9:00:42 AM | show profile But do you see Conn. rushing to claim him? Nooo. |
