| ddesqsd | Posted – 5/14/2007 9:50:52 AM | show profile A lot has been said about the format of Katie Couric's newscast during her first few months as anchor, and how the new format was unpopular with the viewers. Think about this scenario... Imagine if ABC News had decided to stick with Elizabeth Vargas as a solo anchor, rather than moving Charlie from GMA to WNT. Imagine that Elizabeth came back to the anchor job about 1-2 months after she had her baby. Her return would have been sometime in late September or early October, only a few weeks after Katie's debut. Charlie Gibson has been a ratings gold mine for ABC News. Elizabeth Vargas clearly was not. The week before she gave up the WNT anchor position, Bob Schieffer surpassed her in the ratings. My point is this... Suppose Katie Couric would have been competing against Elizabeth Vargas, rather than Charles Gibson. I am sure that Katie's ratings would have been better, and that her newscast would have received much less scrutiny. |

She blew it big time giving voice to right wing hacks like Rush Limbaugh right from the start. I can buy into both Vargas and Couric if they did the same kind of superb work found on Frontline or even 60 Minutes. Don't present the same shifty lying pundits who got us into Iraq and have poisoned the airwaves. |
