Anyone have any trouble getting paid by Realtalk LA? I have.

Same here, though they haven't printed what I wrote for them yet. It's been almost three months.

Runaround
It's been three months for me, too. Every time I ask to get paid I get a different response. It's a shame because I thought they had a good concept - now I just can't imagine many people will continue to write for them. I know I won't.

I just got an e-mail saying they've suspended publication due to a lack of funds. Go figure? They seemed like the real deal. One couldn't find a bilboard or bus in LA without their ad.

Shame
Lack of funds - that's unreal. Something about the business model must not have worked....I wonder who will give the "real" scoop on what went down with RealTalk LA. Not paying writers - that's shameful.

Do they owe you?
BTW, do they owe you money? I haven't gotten a note like that from them and am still owed payment.

RealTALK LA already paid me.
I didn't have a problem -- in fact they paid me right away for all of the stories I submitted, including the pieces I wrote for the June / July issues.

Have you tried calling their offices?

Of course I've called their office. I've also emailed. I just don't think they're very well organized - and communication with them is terrible. I'm just not very impressed so far - I just hope they can turn things around and keep things going - even if I'm not interested in writing for them again.

These guys are fishy
I pitched an article to them about a pretty underground yet awesome bar I frequent, and they stole the idea, assigned a staff reporter....as I found out by browsing their brand new website. I hope they go under.

getting paid
I was at a staff meeting when the publisher and the owner told employees that they only had enough money to pay through that day which was May 15th. They informed everyone that as of that time the magazine was suspending publication because the investors had pulled out and there was no more money. I saw these 2 spend money like it was going out style. It was crazy. I guess that is what happens when 2 rich non-multiculturals try to publish a magazine for all of LA.

Cut pay by half
Here's something I didn't expect. They cut up what I wrote - gave my articles some odd edits - and then paid me only for the number of words they printed - and not the number of words I was assigned. I've never experienced that before.

I've been paid for some but not others. I assume because they pay on publication. Has the June issue come out yet?
Bluelight Posted – 6/8/2007 1:45:40 PM | show profile
Not sure if they pay on publication. I was first told they "pay upon acceptance." I don't know about the second issue. The web site still seems active.

I haven't been paid. I called an editor today and was told that they are bust - but still plan to publish through september? How does that work? How can they afford every billboard in town and screw their writers? Anyone fancy pulling together to get a lawyer? If they can afford to keep publishing, they can afford to pay us money owed.
