On the one hand, you have Johnny Temple of Akashic Books warning that "when you see the book world conglomeratizing, it can only mean less diversity of voices," while at the other end of the room, Grove Atlantic publisher Morgan Entrekin is "very excited... because we now have the opportunity to create the strongest platform for independent publishing that's ever existed in this country." What do you think? |

I can't find a lot of optimism when I see this sort of news; despite upper management assurances to the contrary, at the end of the day, there's a different driving force behind books that are chosen. Like Temple noted, it's niche marketing. Does it mean good news for lesser-known authors, with a bigger push behind them? Only if they deliver in dollars. And quickly. |
