I'm leading a start-up publication (online initially, with annual print publications) specializing in sexual content. Initially, we were planning to work with a very small budget, but now that we have significant support from investors, we need to think on a much larger scale.

We're working with a group of designers with some very strong ideas for marketing and PR, but we recognize that we'll need someone on-board with us who'll be able to manage the site's marketing on a number of levels.

How would you recommend we go about this, either hiring someone in-house or selecting a firm? Since we're extremely small, we would need someone who can cover a good deal of territory. But since we're coming at this cold, we're not sure how to find the right person.

Hi Christina,
Go to the newstand and start looking at the masthead pages of various magazines (esp those aimed at your target audience) and note whether they list an outside PR firm; if yes, there's almost always a phone number included. Then make some calls (or go to the PR firm's website) and get some general info about fees. If the fees sound too high, ask your contact person at these firms to recommend a freelancer.
Good luck!
