Have an inquiry to do some copywriting for a website. Have no idea what to charge, I have a lot of experience in magazine and in copywriting but usually I charge on more of a whole project basis? What the going rate? $25 an hour? More? Help!

Do yourself a favor and splurge on the 2007 Writers Market. There's a handy-dandy chart in the front that notes low, average, and high rates for a plethora of assignments. It also breaks it down into hourly or by-project rates.

I picked one up this weekend to do some scouting and I was thrilled to find I was about to underprice myself! Good thing I didn't sent out any bids yet. ;-)

Do you have to charge hourly? Is the client requesting that? If not, why not charge per project since you have some experience with that? Or why not start with the per-project mindset and then go back and do the math to see what a reasonable hourly rate might be.

Obviously there are a lot of factors the determine what you should charge: Who's the client (big or small, nonprofit or corporate, big city or small city)? Will there be lots of revisions (and will that be an annoyance for you)? Is the client easy to work with? Are you bringing some specific expertise to the table (or would it be easy for the client to replace you)?

But I think $25 is way low. Not knowing any of the details, my barometer would start around $65/hour and adjust up or down depending on the details. That's a rough number, because I usually try to charge per project instead when I can.

Good luck.
