Hello All,

I'm a freelance writer with an extensive background in the restaurant and wine industries looking to start picking up contract work pr work. I will be involved with writing mostly, but potentially some events and media tastings. I'm trying to set prices and what I've seen is all over the place. Any thoughts on either per word, per page, or hourly rates. I'm also in San Francisco if that skews things.

Thanks for any thoughts and advice.

Hi Genevieve,
I asked some restaurant people, and in Los Angeles, the average amount hovers between $1000-2000 a month for an upscale restaurant with some sort of "name" (famous chef/owner/investors). I think alot of that also includes event planning and hustling for tv location shoots i.e. getting the restaurant on shows like Entourage; so you'd be doing more than just pitching to the food media. A lot of times, part of the compensation will be free meals, which may be useful if you need to schmooze OTHER clients and want somewhere nice to take them.
Hope this helps a little.
