Although I love the prestige of being where I am, I am dissatisfied for a number of reasons. One of them is everything we do is very formulaic, and a lot of it can be handled by someone with far less experience than me (I've been in this racket for 10 years. Most of that was trade press.) I am competing for a managing editor position at a consumer magazine with circulation of around 100,000. Obviously, a move to this book would be a move to a lower prestige outlet. But it is a more senior position, and it would be more the kind of journalism I want to be doing. The job would likely pay no more than I make now. I have mixed feelings about this to say the least. If I take it, will it make it harder for me to move back to one of the major news services? I'd be going from a small fish in a big pond to a big fish in a small pond, and I'm not sure how that would look on my resume. What do you think? |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 6/15/2007 2:53:01 AM | show profile Managing editor at a consumer magazine, whatever its size, is a considerably different job than working at a news service. To me, the issue is more about what direction you want to move your career in. If you truly desire to become involved with consumer magazines, and do managing editor type of work, I wouldn't be concerned about whether I could return to a job I disliked if that didn't pan out. --I'm a cog in the machinery of a major news wire. If it's a well-respected, well-produced, well-funded publication in a genre where you're interested in taking your career, go for it and don't look back. Likewise, if you feel that you're in a dead end job where you are. Follow your gut. |

It was absolutely no problem moving back to an even-more-major-circulation news operation a couple of years later. The zig-zag was worth it in every way. |
