spam and inappropriate content
Hey Seamus,
I think I've discovered two posters posting inappropriate content. I subscribed to mediabistro.com and got a somewhat rude awakening when replying to someone saying she/he had inside info on CNN/USA and....President Jon Klein and CNN's security. One such poster claimed to be monitoring all those who posted to that particular blog. If she/he meant to be intimidating....for me...it didn't work.

Seamus, here's one to consider....
This is the type of racist, obscene vitriol this person, who is new to the board, spews incessantly. Insane yes, but this is not the place for it. You will find this post in the TV News section.

we know you stick your noses here and all over the fucking internet.

Mrs. Astor was MARRIED INTO the Astor family, she wasn't born into it. She grew up in New Hampshire which is no where near 5th ave. Mr. Astor was her 3rd husband. Her kids are the same age as GVB.

Fucktards!! You are too stupid to live. Please fucking read and learn shit before you post lies and bullshit on your board. Look up fucking wikipedia you morons.

You claim that you don't care about the Vanderbiltness but that's all you talk about, then complain when others mention the Vanderbiltness. Not one of your fat, 50 year old trailer trash cunts would even BE fans or watching Anderson if it wasn't for the money you think you're going to get when he takes one look at you and falls in love but since it didn't happen the last time or the other 11 times you went to book signings, maybe the next time, like bat-shit crazy Xtina thinks. BTW, Xtina, the X stands for Christ like in Xmas so it should be Xina not Xtina but from the pictures on Freakspeakers you look to be some sort of paki shit. Sorry but Anderson isn't going to marry Abubar Jabimberal okay? If he chooses to marry a woman, she'll be white k?<<<

well, he/she is right about Brooke Astor marrying into the Astor family.

so let me get this deal straight, seamus...

MB was just sold for oodles of cash to some even wealthier corporation. and now you want somebody here to take upon themselves the job of bulletin board monitor (something webmasters at most sites consider their own responsibility) and do it for what we might call -- give or take an AG password -- free?

Do I have that right?

Granite,

So what if she/he is right about Astor. The fact is that the post is racist, hateful and just plain nuts. No one here gives a shit about any of the garbage this person spews every time they login.

It is offensive. Period.

Inappropriate Content
Seamus,
Does this include vulgar language or does anything goes on MB? In reading and scanning through some of the postings here, I wonder if there's anyone over 30 'cause, honestly....some of the people here have to be in their early 20's or with little education or don't have the ability to be articulate without using english to express themselves.

Yes, Stanley...Media Bistro was sold for 23 MILLION.

I doubt very much there is anyone stupid enough to want to work for them for a freakin FREE membership, which costs them NOTHING...and the value of which is about the same. ZERO. Especially when they post so many jobs that DON'T PAY.

You remember the old cliché, you get what you pay for?

What Stanley and Nikongirl said.
Seamus started this ?forum cops? wanted post 2 months ago and still no volunteers. I?m not surprised. Who would want to through the viper pit called ?TV News Corner??

MB has more than 25 staffers listed on their About Us page. I get the impression their job description doesn?t include reading/posting/moderating the boards because they?re busy generating income. For example, planning courses, advertising, job board, etc. I guess MB views the board as a non-income generating section of the site. So it?s a free for all.

I frequent a couple of other boards where staffers have an online presence. They post regularly and act as moderators. You can see that one of them is usually logged in when you go to the boards, so that discourages spam and wackos. Posters who stray from the topic to engage in personal attacks are suspended for a few days and banned if they don?t shape up. Their bbs software has more features and is more user-friendly. I wish Jupiter media would upgrade the software. Hire some moderators, too.

Nellie, I'm with you. Censorship is bad, but there are some people on here who either need to take lithium or take their angry rantings somewhere else. They've ruined so many threads with personal attacks and general unprofessional demeanor. They really belong more on AOL and other free-for-all dungheaps.

Obviously, Nikon girl. I was being facetious.
Two points:
1. Nothing infuriates these people more than NOT getting worked up by the "shocking" things they post.
2.By moving the thread over here and pointing it out--or even responding -- you are calling attention to it, and giving this misanthrope exactly what he/she wants.

In response to some of the questions raised earlier in this thread, I think that getting a $49 value for reading through the forums regularly, something most of you are already doing on your own, is a pretty good deal. If you don't, then don't apply.

As far as whether this job should be done by mediabistro.com employees, as nellie bly points out, mediabistro.com has a very small staff, and even among that group, there are only three of us focused on membership (under which the BBS falls). We do try to keep up with what's going on in the forums, but it's difficult to follow every single thread, which is why we're asking for help from the heavy users to help flag violators and keep things from deteriorating.

Having said that, we do recognize that certain forums, especially TVNewser, have gotten so bad that it's ruining the experience for users who want to have substantive discussions. We are therefore making a renewed push to stay more on top of discussion threads in that forum. You may see more posts being pulled, and repeated/flagrant violators may be banned entirely.

In addition, we are looking into new BBS platforms to replace the home-grown one we currently use. The key is making sure the transition is seamless for all of you, so that you can continue to use your mediabistro.com login. We will let you know when we have any updates on that front.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Greg
