i bought an apple powerbook less than a year ago, and the cd/dvd player has been malfunctioning since then twice. the first time was less than two weeks after i purchased the powerbook...it just stopped playing cds/dvds completely. now (less than a year later) it spits some of them out, and takes atleast 15 minutes to 'read' any of them.

i'm scared...i'm a college student, and absolutely do not have the money to purchase another powerbook. please advise asap.

take it back
If it is less than a year ago, it should still be under warranty ...

I bought an eMac a few years ago and had major problems with my combo drive. (sent in so many times that they actually came to my house to pick it up the fourth time) It turns out the type of drive Apple was using at the time was faulty (and ended up being recalled) and a lot of people were having similar problems. I think it was Pioneer, I'm not sure. Anyway I would research your specific model and see if anyone else is having drive problems. If enough people are, chances are Apple has recalled them and you can probably get a replacement for free. Call them and ask. They're usually super helpful and nice.

I would have sent it back the moment this problem started. Especially with Apple which is notorious for floating not-completely tested products on the market in its efforts to be the first, leaving early adopters as their final round of product testers. As a general rule: don't buy new Apple products until they've been on the market for one year.

Are these media discs cheap? Sometimes some DVD drives won't read certain really cheapo discs.

I just got a Macbook. I have noticed that if there is anything wrong with CD-- it spits it out. It is a lot less forgiving than my G4 Desktop.

Find your nearest Apple Store and make an appointment at the Genuis Bar. You should still be under warranty. My experience with the Genuis Bar has been very good... can't speak for all cities, just Denver.
