Topic: Why Don't People Read??

| LoDo | Posted 6/21/2007 3:34:50 PM | show profile It happened again: I got a call about my services; when I asked if the person had actually read my information and knew that I am a virtual PR professional, she said no and that the position was strictly 9 to 5. I state that I am a virtual PR professional in my email subject lines, my resume, on my Website and press kit and in my cover letters. Is there a better way to get people to READ, or am I doomed to constantly repeating my status? Suggestions are welcome! ------ Lori |
| linjohn | Posted 6/21/2007 7:46:43 PM | show profile I'm a PR person, and I've never actually heard the term "virtual PR professional." I assume by "virtual" you mean you work remotely? Maybe you would have better luck with "freelance publicist", "Independent PR Professional" or something along those lines. If I am misunderstanding, feel free to let me know. |
| mailbag | Posted 6/21/2007 7:52:55 PM | show profile | email poster Usually people call themselves mobile. To my knowledge (which is not much when it comes to PR) mobile commuting has caught on in the big firms - especially since they have technology clients who enabled mobility in the first place back in the late 1990s... Perhaps smaller firms are still stuck on 'gotta be here so I can watch you work' idea? |
| Cyrus | Posted 6/22/2007 10:02:09 AM | show profile I think you need to redefine what you're offering. I would never use the term virtual because it's hard to know what that means. IOW, people can't tell whether you're wanting to work on a consulting basis, full-time but working remotely, etc. I think PR consultant might be a better label. People tend to better understand that a consultant wants to work off-site, etc. They also know that they will also get benefits, such as not paying the employer portion of your FICA. ------ Cyrus Afzali Astoria Communications www.astoriacomm.com |
| LoDo | Posted 6/22/2007 6:20:44 PM | show profile Thanks, everyone! I will start using "mobile," "remote" and "consultant." I had labeled myself as a telecommuter and freelancer, but you'd be amazed how many people didn't know what a telecommuter was. And nowadays, freelancing can mean you're simply a 1099 on-site employee. ------ Lori |
| jbrandeis1 | Posted 8/22/2007 10:07:15 AM | show profile Virtual PR Not only do I have my own freelance business/consultancy, but I'm also teamed up with a virtual PR agency. It's a relatively new term ("virtual"), but yes, it does mean that you can work from home or anywhere for your client. And it's a great way to work. As for people not reading, I get that all the time. It's EXTREMELY annoying! There are so many people out there who ignore what you say and just apply to the job or call you for information. I think it's part of being a society that wants info immediately and can get it quickly. I'm not saying we should put up with people who don't read carefully, but you can point it out to them in a non-threatening way. Jocelyn JBLH Communications New York, NY |
