| Janetblueyes | Posted 6/22/2007 11:18:22 AM | show profile Random Friday post: Anybody else a fan of "Deadliest Catch" on the Discovery Channel? I haven't missed a single episode and am suffering Captain Sig/Captain Phil withdrawl. At least Dirtiest Jobs will resume on Tuesday nights. Mike Rowe--yummy. Carry on, and have a wonderful weekend. |
| Printingman | Posted 6/23/2007 10:13:17 AM | show profile | email poster Yeah, I like it too. I'm a big fan of anything ocean as I live 2 blocks from the beach and love to surf. I also like watching storms. |
| ursulaclaire | Posted 6/23/2007 12:31:31 PM | show profile | email poster Sig My husband and I ran into Sig at The Hyatt in Chicago a few weeks ago. My husband is a huge fan of the show and so he slapped him on the shoulder and said, "Sig, what's up?" He sort of looked at him like, "How do I know you again?" and my husband said, "I love your show." After that, he realized that he was a fan and he said, "Yeah, good stuff, huh?" and walked off. Afterwards, I said to my husband, "You confused the poor guy. He thought he knew you from somewhere. Why did you slap him on the shoulder like you knew him from work or something?" ha ha ha...it was hilarious. |
| foto | Posted 6/23/2007 8:33:35 PM | show profile What is "Deadliest Catch" Janet? Do you live near the ocean? |
| Janetblueyes | Posted 6/24/2007 12:13:22 AM | show profile Foto- Deadliest Catch is a series on the Discovery Channel that chronicles the lives of Alaska crab fishermen out on the Bering Sea. It is an awesome and addictive series! I live on the East End of Long Island, right near the ocean, so I sort of have an affinity for those that make their living from the sea. |
| foto | Posted 6/24/2007 10:54:09 AM | show profile I'll watch for it Janet. Eastern Long Island must be beautiful.. I live in NJ. Not near the shore but we try to get there when we can. Are you a writer? |
| Nikongirl | Posted 6/24/2007 11:48:16 AM | show profile Hey Janet, I like to watch the 'Deadliest Catch' too! And....I am also from the East end of LI. As a matter of fact- going there for my 40th high school reunion in July. I can hardly wait. I haven't been home in 20 years. I will be going to Cupsogue Beach as much as I can, that was our main 'beach party' beach. I am trying to organize at least one beach party while I'm there. The Perfect Storm is one of my all-time favourite movies too...like Printman, anything ocean reels me in....Jaws was like watching my life when we were kids sleeping at the beach on Fire Island and swimming at night under the moonlight. Great White sightings often closed the beaches. |
| foto | Posted 6/24/2007 7:26:44 PM | show profile The boat that was actually used in "The Perfect Storm" is an actual fishing vessel based out of Barnegat Light NJ. I saw it once when I was down there. It was bigger than I thought. I was once snorkeling off Cozumel Mexico and found myself swimming with a large barracuda. I think I ran on the water back to shore. I later found out they are not really a threat to swimmers. |
| questoo1 | Posted 6/24/2007 8:08:21 PM | show profile I've become a fan of survivorman....I can't say if he'll make your panties moist like mike rowe or sig&phil, but its a cool show |
| Janetblueyes | Posted 6/24/2007 10:50:02 PM | show profile Foto- I'm a writer and editor but seriously thinking of changing careers. I've had enough of the dismal pay. Nikongirl-So nice to meet someone else from the South Fork! I seem to remember from your posts that you now live in Canada? If having a woman on a crab boat was not considered bad luck, I would think of heading to Dutch Harbor and wrangling a job as a greenhorn! |
| foto | Posted 6/25/2007 6:15:33 AM | show profile Well I guess that would pay better than editorial. When is the crab season? I wonder how cold the Aleutian Islands gets that time of year. Maybe you should practice on some horseshoe crabs in Montauk. Only joking. Let me know, I'll come with you. |
| Nikongirl | Posted 6/25/2007 10:41:15 AM | show profile Hey Janet, Yeah, I live in Toronto...but I sure miss being on boats all summer and being at the beach anytime, I want all year long. I hope one of my friends will take me over to Fire Island by boat when I go in July...Speedboats. YEAH! I want to drive out to Shinnicock and Montauk, Shelter Island and of course pop by East and South Hamptons for a nostalgic walk down memory lane. However, there is only so much a person can do in 5 short days, one being devoted to reunion. Every year I go to Barbados to cover their Jazz Festival and every year we have a great 5-hour catamaran party out to feed the turtles...5 hours is never enough, I always want more. I have often thought I could move down there and become a crewmember. That reminds me....better book a rental car so I get around. ahh, horseshoe crabs.....razor clams and the good old jelly fish. I'm lookin to sit down for a good bowl of chowder across from the dock at Shinnicock while I'm there. |
| foto | Posted 6/25/2007 8:04:09 PM | show profile Hmmm, nobody ever gets that nostalgic about NJ. |
| Janetblueyes | Posted 6/26/2007 9:35:15 AM | show profile Nikongirl--I went crabbing last night and thought about you. I caught a dozen blue claws in about an hour. Hope your trip out here is wonderful! Scallop season is good this year and the clams are juicy and sweet. Foto-I once spent a wonderful drunken weekend in Atlantic City and from what I remember, NJ is a lovely place! |
| pob | Posted 6/26/2007 10:30:26 AM | show profile Great show I don't have cable, but I caught a bit of it for the first time while waiting around at a press check last week. A lot of fun to watch. |
| Nikongirl | Posted 6/26/2007 1:16:49 PM | show profile Janet, you lucky girl.... Since I haven't been back in 20 years, maybe you can tell me where is the best local place for a great hang and seafood dinner or lunch. I am going to haul around with my camera in tow and will of course be stopping for food, so if you can let me know a couple of places even that would be a big help. Not so much looking for the hip Manhattan crowd hangouts, just some good old place where locals hang out. Thanks. |
| csnation.net | Posted 6/26/2007 8:33:23 PM | show profile wow "Deadliest Catch" is crazy I have only seen about one episode of "Deadliest Catch", on the Discovery Channel, and let me tell you that it's pretty crazy out there. I can't believe that people would risk their lives catching crabs for a living. I know that some of those guys were born to catch crabs and the different types of seafood on a boat no less on a Discovery Channel show. What has this world come to? ------ one love krew lives forever |
| foto | Posted 6/27/2007 6:21:28 AM | show profile Wouldn't it just be easier to catch blue crabs in Chesapeake Bay? I can taste 'em now. With some Old Bay Seasoning and a cold beer. Perfect. But you might not want to tell someone on the first date you've got crabs. Hmmm. |
| Janetblueyes | Posted 6/27/2007 12:26:55 PM | show profile Nikongirl- A few low key and really good restaurants are: Hampton Bays: Tide Runners, Indian Cove, F.O.O.D., Gators Southampton: 75 Main Bar & Grill (under new management--he is a friend of mine), Fellingham's, Barristers, Plaza Cafe (pricey but excellent), Breakwater's on the Park, John Duck's, Southampton Publick House (great beers--they are a microbrewery) Sag Harbor: Spinnakers Water Mill: Mirko's (expensive and good, but big with the NYC crowd), Foodies Bridgehampton: World Pie, Bobby Van's ($$$) Napeague (on the way out to Montauk): Lobster Roll also known as "Lunch," because of their big sign saying just that. Other excellent places but expensive and crowded with summer people include: Almond, Madame Tongs, Nick & Tony's, Serafin, JL East, Alison by the Beach, Pacific East There is no shortage of great places to eat. I suggest hitting up the local seafood shop and having a clam bake on the beach! |
| Nikongirl | Posted 6/27/2007 12:50:35 PM | show profile Thanks Janet, I am writing them all down and will do my best to get to as many as I can.....geez, my mouth is not only watering I am about to start drooling. ;-) |
| Nikongirl | Posted 8/29/2007 7:32:06 PM | show profile Hey Janet, The Dealiest Catch guys are on Larry King either tonight or tomorrow. I think it's tonight. I was only listening with one ear from another room... |
