Topic: tips on landing a freelance copy editor gig?

| angshul | Posted 7/3/2007 7:48:03 AM | show profile I'm just starting to take this freelancing thing seriously and seem to be a bit stuck. I have five years of newspaper editor/staff writer experience and some freelance writing background, but I'd love to break into copy editing (even proofreading) -- anyone have any tips on how to do this? Job leads would be appreciated as well! Thanks. |

Another good idea if you're willing to make a small investment in time and money in order to boost your credibility and your connections is to take a copy editing course. MB offers in-class and online courses, as do many colleges and community colleges. My local university happens to have a strong publishing program, and even though I'm only halfway through their copy editing course I already have 2 clients lined up. One client was a former student who recruits freelancers through the course instructor. The second client is someone I previously did (non-copyediting) work for. Through the course I've also found out about a lot of staff job opportunities, but I also feel a lot more confident in my skills. If you have a solid grasp of grammar and editing standards, you might not want to take a full-semester course, but it might even help just to take a 2-day workshop - just to connect with people in your local area who may have some connections. |
