| writinglife | Posted 7/3/2007 11:52:29 AM | show profile | email poster Hi, I'm looking for moms of 8-11 year old girls for a story on the marketing of "sexualized" dolls and other toys --bratz dolls, for example. I want to know how moms talk to their girls about these toys--and how to protect girls from an increasingly sexualized culture (Paris, Britney) without totally unplugging them from the world we live in... The article is for a national women's magazine If you are interested, e mail me off the board Thanks! |
| bergdorfblonde | Posted 7/4/2007 7:51:02 PM | show profile Barbie was the original doll sexpot Barbie was based on a German sex doll named Lili. She was sold as a pornographic party favor to adult men. In the 1950's Ruth Handler found one while travelling to Europe and copied the design and marketed it under the name Barbie after her daughter Barbara. Barbie was an instant flop; young mothers objected to giving their daughters a doll that looked like the proverbial "other woman." The Handlers hired a marketing expert and psychologist to spin it into a tool to teach little girls proper grooming. If you look at the history of Barbie, you will see that Barbie in the 1950s was far racier for that time period than the Bratz dolls of today, given that she was copied from a German sex doll. http://www.fiftiesweb.com/pop/barbie.htm |
