I was hoping for some advise on the individual desk side visits (my experience is in group events). How long in advance do you extend the invitation? Is earlier in the week better vs. later? Did you bring a gift? Also, any general advice as to what has made your visits successful in the past would be very much appreciated. Thanks! |
| maphop | Posted 7/5/2007 8:36:16 PM | show profile I'm sorry but I'm afraid I'm not clear on what you're asking us to comment on. You say that your client is in hospitality but you're also asking about "deskside visits." Generally, a media tour refers to an individual (actor, author, politician, athlete, charity spokesperson) who is touring one or more cities in order to appear on multiple outlets (radio or television) or to have pre-arranged interviews with print and electronic media journalists. If your client is in hospitality - the owner of a hotel? the owner of a cruise line? - than I'm assuming that you're simply attempting to set up "schmooze" or "meet and greet" appts with editors or trravel writers who might have an interest in the product, right? If that's the case, I'd say that you want to identify the top five to eight contacts who can do your client the most potential good, ask for coffee/lunch/cocktail appts, first - followed by "can we sit in your conference room for twenty minutes with you?" meetings - and, with the exception of first thing Monday mornings or last thing Friday afternoons, I'm not clear that a specific time of the week is better or worse. Of course, that's assuming that you're thinking also of any magazine deadlines that would be looming for editors...they're pretty much the same for everyone and you won't get much attention during days reserved for putting an issue to bed. Gift? Only if it's appropriate to your client (maybe they've got a spa with fabulous products?) but otherwise I'd offer to bring the coffee/donuts/Red Bull as appropriate. |
