It's the one where you can win an internship with Katie Couric by posting your print or broadcast story in one of 3 topics. This was a rather obvious attempt by CBS to make their brand a little more younger and hipper by getting the 'kids' involved. Anyways I kind of forgot about it until I got my itunes gift card for entering (my real motivation for entering). So I logged on again last month and they hadn't announced a winner but I browsed some of the postings. Because it was set up to create an online 'community', people would assume multiple handles and criticize other students work. Or they would boost their own pieces. I'm sure some contestants manipulated the rankings for 'most viewed' and 'most popular' and 'highest ranked.' What a great community of student journalists! I thought it was more laughable than anything else. But I just checked the site, given that it's mid-July, and the website now says an intern was selected. It didn't even say who had won the contest and you can't even access the student work any longer. I wonder if CBS feels like their experiment had gone awry and were worried contestants would flood their offices with protests if they didn't end up liking the winning entry. Honestly, I didn't think I would win, nor do I care, but it would have been interesting to see which entry got the internship with Katie Couric. Last I heard she slaps her staff - doh! |
