Writing narrative nonfiction and need an experienced freelance transcriber, or a reliable service, to transcribe about 30 interviews, with more to come. I'm using a digital voice recorder.

Recommendations gratefully accepted.

I've tried several services in the past and liked TBL Transcription Services the most: http://www.tbltranscription.com. They transcribed a long interview I did for my blog and did a great job.

Are you concerned with accuracy when you use the services? Do you have to compare the recording with the transcript after?

Also, has anyone used Dragon Naturally speaking or a computer program to transcribe?

Caitlin -- Beth Hunter here. Actually, it's my company (Master Transcription). As an attorney, writer and editor, I deliver extremely high-quality transcripts. Truthfully, I believe that the average transcription company out there does not run the kind of tight ship that I do with regard to my demanding requirements that transcripts be perfect. Therefore, you would never have to "compare" the audio to the transcript when it comes to transcripts that I do. If one of my transcriptionists prepares a transcript, I go over EVERY WORD. That may be crazy to some people, but it's my name on the proverbial door, and I have to be certain my clients are getting what they bargained for.

Dragon Naturally Speaking, from all that I have read, may be a great option for one person who trains the software to regurgitate back what they, alone, are saying. For purposes of trying to transcribe others you record, fuggedaboudit.

Indian Transcription Service at less than a $1
The one service that caught my eye was Transcriptionstar. Their prices were, and still are, $1 per minute of recording. What is astonishing is the impeccable transcription quality and the quick delivery time. I got back my transcripts within 1 and half days after recording submission. They are the ones doing the transcription for all my podcasts. Transcription is a non-essential process that needs to be as low prices as possible, especially to be affordable to the light pockets of podcasters lke me ;-)

I'm a MediaBistro subscriber and own Master Transcription. I am a licensed, nonpracticing attorney, a former writer-editor with two different publications, and prepare very high-quality transcripts. Check out my website or email me at bjhunter01@mac.com.
