Have you ever gotten an assignment that turned out to be more work that it's worth and turned it down after you'd accepted it? Is this a total no-no and reputation killer? An assignment I got wants me to track down obsure sources and it seems like a huge headache. Any thoughts?

I think we all have had these assignments. The best thing to do is complete it -- like you promised, then learn from it.

Maybe you never want to work for those people again, maybe it won't seem like as much work when you're away from it for a while.

I'm not sure you will be blacklisted, but it's good karma to finish something you started. You could also ask the editor, "This is much more work and wo/man hours than I understood it would be, is there any way we can boost my payment?"

They may say no, but you asked.

Good luck!

I would follow-through but ask for more time and/or money. Then in the future be more specific when you define the scope of the project. I've bowed out, but it was after I'd completed the work I'd been contracted for and the editor wanted to assign more (this is the easiest way to get assignments but it just wasn't worth it to me).

Put it this way: Let's say you took the assignment, and quickly find out it's going to take 5 times as long as you thought because you have to do a lot of traveling that you hadn't counted on. There's nothing wrong with going back to the client and being honest about that.
