Hi, All:

I have been seriously considering moving out of the US for a year or so, and am most interested in London as my destination. I'm just wondering if there are any f/t media professionals out there who have moved to the UK and are willing to share some pointers, warnings, words of advice, or whatever? (I say "f/t" only because I'm an editor who doesn't want to count on freelancing, and I would assume that freelancers can basically continue working as usual even if they relocate.)

I've enabled my e-mail in case anyone wants to contact me directly.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Get a Visa or freelance
Hello,

I lived and worked in London this past year.

The hardest thing about the move is working legally. Try getting your visa through the Highly Skilled Migrant Worker program. Depending on your age, education and other odd points, you may qualify.

Otherwise, make sure a company is sponsoring you to work there legally before you go. It is more of a challenge to find companies that are willing to sponsor, especially since the EU was expanded to Eastern Europe.

These are really the only two ways to work legally there, and therefore get a job with one of the big mags or pubs. Unless, of course, you marry a Brit.

Best of Luck!

If one of your parents or grandparents was born in Ireland, you could be eligible for EU citizenship!

(Wish it applied to me--I'm one quarter Irish, but grandmother was born in good 'ol US of A.)

If only it applied to great-grandparents! (I'm 1/4 Irish, too.) ;-)

visa
I'm also thinking of moving to London.

3 of 4 of my grandparents are from the UK, but since I'm an American and not a member of one of the Commonwealth countries I don't qualify. As far as I know, American's are not eligeble for the UK Ancestry Visa.

Anyone know any good job sites to search for European/UK Media jobs in English? I've been using Monster & The Guardian Online, but always nice to hear about more!

thanks!

I work for a media company with headquarters in the UK. People change offices all the time (not just to London, but Hong Kong, Madrid, Shanghai, etc.) If you can, try to work for a global company with office in NY or California first, and then try to transfer. I don't know for a fact that it's easier to get a visa if you already work for them, but it seems plausible.

Does anyone know how easy it would be to transfer from Conde Nast or Hearst in NY to London? I'm getting so sick of NY.

Actually, I work for a large publisher with offices in London...I just don't know how easy it would be to get an internal transfer. (And to interview there.) It seems like getting the proper paperwork in order to look like a "serious" candidate would work better...
