I would like to find work as a freelance proofreader for publishers. I'm armed with a copy of Writer's Market, but after visiting some of the various publishing house websites, I've noticed that none of them have career links, only general "contact us" links. Is it considered appropriate to send an inquiry e-mail regarding freelance proofreading opportunities through the "contact us" link, and if so, who should I direct the e-mail to? Any advice you could share with a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of publishers use people they already know, or who have been recommended to them. I don't think they usually advertise for proofreaders. I only do freelancing for a few educational companies so don't know much about the big houses, but I think if you are totally new the best place to start would be to call the general number and ask for the production dept. Try to see if you can speak with a managing editor or someone along those lines to ask how you can get into proofreading for them.
