| kvguzman | Posted 7/16/2007 3:49:42 AM | show profile | email poster I'm playing with the idea of food writing (a combination of two of my passions) but I'm not sure if I should be looking into getting a culinary degree or something of the sort - would it be necessary to establish myself as a Food Writer? what are the pros and cons? |
| foodlit | Posted 7/16/2007 11:58:42 AM | show profile It's not necessary at all. Though I think it would be really fun, if you like to cook. :) I'd suggest the food writing class here. I took it and learned a ton, which led to selling one of my class assignments and a continuing freelance contributor to my local paper. I did a food blog too, which helped generate interest and additional content. Pam |
| Otoole | Posted 7/16/2007 7:59:36 PM | show profile | email poster Food background There are quite a lot of folks out there like yourself with a passion for food and who write. But the ones who demonstrate that they've worked in restaurants, gone to cooking school, freelanced for different papers or somehow used that passion--are the food writers with the most credibility, the most respected and authority to voice strong opinions (in my opinion). In a climate of so many Blogs and so many voices, I think it's even more important to set yourself apart with credentials. |

| wineaux | Posted 7/17/2007 8:37:11 AM | show profile I never went to cooking school but have worked in the culinary field for over 15 years. I have worked as a caterer, cooking instructor, personal chef, event planner and R and D researcher for a variety of food related businesses. I have no solid background in the wine industry, but moved to CA wine country and wrote for local publications there for the duration of the time I lived there. I think if you are a good writer, are truly passionate about food, then you have the tools necessary. It doesn't hurt to keep up to speed with the latest trends in the culinary industry. I comb the food shows for material and always hit the jackpot, both for my catering business and my freelance work. |
