I have been published in major newspapers within my own country, internationally, and even some an American newspaper last year. However, there is one publication I really want to get published in and that's the NY TIMES. Just to have the NY TIMES or LA TIMES on my resume would mean the world to me! I have called the NY TIMES, I've found the specific editors to pitch to. Yet never a response. I wonder what I am doing wrong?

I still get published elsewhere. Anyhow, anyone that has ever been published in the NY TIMES or LA TIMES can you tell me how you did it? What exactly did you do? I really want to know. It just seems so hard to do. But I am willing to take any advice?

Are you really studying the paper and targeting sections
that use freelancers? Escapes is almost totally written by freelancers. I got into four sections of the NY Times with essays or opinion pieces. Just this year, three of my students broke in with essays. None of these were pitched (typical
for essays.) They submitted to the right editor, had the
right word count and a great piece.

I was also told Escapes was filled up for the rest of the year, so that may not be the way to go.

If you contacted the right editors, then ask what their needs are. They will tell you. Good luck!

I write a lot for the NYT; it's as villagegal advises. Read the paper extremely carefully and get to know each section and which would be the very best fit for you (sports? business? culture?) then focus on that. Once you can get a few minutes of an editor's time (perhaps the toughest challenge) and they realize you're skilled and have good ideas for them, it gets easier. I imagine they are inundated with people eager for clips and bylines.
