Could be anyone--a stranger, a relative, and old friend you lost contact with, 3rd grade teacher, etc. The "thank you" will be directed at someone who had helped you, inspired you, surprised you, believed in you, went the extra mile, showed you kindness, generosity, love, forgiveness.
