Hi All:

I"m such a newbie and need some advice. I'm a seasoned pr pro looking to cross over into freelance writing /editorial.
I actively keep a blog which is fairly new, and I'm wondering how it can negatively impact my potential to be published. More precisely - if I find and scout good ideas and write them up on my blog, are they then no longer of interest as a pitch to print /online media outlets? Also, do editors look down on the fact that I blog since I don't have any clips to show?
I feel it can demonstrate my thinking and creativity and at the very least, my basic writing skills which I'm confident in.

I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the possibilities. I want to continue the blog, but not if its going to take away from my ability to land my first clips and get on the road to some published pieces.
Thank you so much for any wisdom!!

I don't think blogging is the way to get clips. Put your energy into pitching ideas or writing essays and sending them out. If you find good story ideas, write a query letter and pitch them.

I totally agree with Village Gal -- a well-written blog might be a good "extra" to show off your chops, but published clips are WAY more important. I have to ask you, and anyone else, however -- I have five years as a weekly newspaper editor under my belt, as well as a few small freelance writing gigs, and I can't get anyone to even look at me. I'm not a Pulitzer Prize winner, but I've got lots of experience -- have you found that you don't even get a courtesy response when you submit to job postings? Or is it just me?
