How do you feel about social networking tools like MySpace, forums like this one, mobile devices designed for social networking, etc? Do you have a though or idea for how mediabistro.com can expand it's social networking online? We'd love to hear from you.

I prefer face-to-face networking. You can add more cities or counties. There are at least three writers' organizations in Fairfield County and Westport, Connecticut, especially, has lots and lots of writers.

Even if you can't institute real social networking right away, it'd be great if you made some upgrades to the forums to make ad hoc social networking possible (these upgrades are all just standard forum stuff):

Specifically:
-make changing screennames very difficult, so you can recognize posters without them posting under a whole bunch of separate monikers (see the TVNews forum for an example of screenname changing gone haywire)
-beef up the user profiles to include more than just a tally of their posts -- include the ability of users to put some info about themselves into their profiles and have the profiles include links to everything that poster has posted
-provide a directory of members that you can search and sort by member name and some other data, such as profession, years of experience and location, which users would indicate at registration (either voluntarily or required).

Just these simple things would make it much easier to get to "know" the posters on this board, even before you develop more complex functionality.
