I had an interview at a big cable network yesterday. The interview went super well and then--slam, a writing test. The job is mostly technical and marketing oriented but the writing test included 5-6 different assignments in it--from coming up with a website to poll questions, to suggesting marketing ideas to writing paragraphs and paragraphs with the "voice of the brand".

I have worked in TV extensively for 7 years now. I have never had to do anything like this. I was a bit floored when I was told about it, and it was written all over my face, I am sure. In any case, I wrote them a very polite letter saying I am highly qualified for the position, ready to show my reel, provide them with references but not ready to spend hours doing work that may not guarantee me a job...let alone hand out ideas to them for free.

Has anyone had this type of an experience? I used to think that I'll do anything just to be at a big network. That was when I was 25. At 30, I am no longer willing to put myself on the line this way, especially after a big network show blatantly stole one of my ideas without hiring me in the end.
