Would like to find some more freelance proofing work. I have done this type of work for only one client, who is a friend of mine. I was filling in for someone and she told me what she usually pays that person, and it seemed reasonable to me, so I went with it.

But I'm not sure what the going rate is. Anyone willing to divulge their rates?

Thanks!

i get a wide range of $20-35 depending on the cilent. in my experience book publishers pay under $25/hr. i do charge my non-publishing clients more but they generally ask for me to do things in a very short period of time, so it is worth it for them.

Completely depends on the type of work and the company. Some places will negotiate, some will not. My current employer does not negotiate and has a set per page rate, accompanied by a "take it or leave it" attitude.

I proof a few days a week for an ad agency that has a set rate of $30/hr. For two long-time clients I charge $35/hr (one is an engineering group, and the other a university).

Most of the job postings I've seen that mention rates offer $20-35, with $20 being offered for format (comparing apples to apples) rather than content proofing.

I live in San Francisco, which may or may not be important to the question.

Freelance Proofreading Rates
As some others stated, the average rate is $25 per hour. But it definitely depends on the client. I also base my rate on if the material is technical or nontechnical and the turnaround time it's needed. So I say it's between $20 and $35 per hour for most jobs.
