| newyorker | Posted 7/24/2007 10:38:37 PM | show profile An acquaintance has asked me to help write a business plan for a start-up company. I have never done this before an am not sure what to charge...Do I do it per page, per hour, per assignment, per word? And what rate? I normally make $20-$25/hr freelance writing (not business writing related). |
| reporterwriter | Posted 7/24/2007 10:59:01 PM | show profile Quote the client a whole-project figure, so there's no quibbling over the number of pages or the amount of time. Base the quote on what the client wants the plan to contain (there's no "standard" plan -- sections are included or not depending on how the plan will be used) and how much research you'll have to do. Will someone else build the charts and do the formatting? If not, figure that time, too. Your hourly rate is terribly low, by the way. |
| newyorker | Posted 7/24/2007 11:08:10 PM | show profile there's no research involved on my side...she will send me bullet points of what she wants written out and I just write it out. |
| stlagrange | Posted 7/25/2007 7:01:33 AM | show profile Quotation I did it in France and I asked 750 euros i(about 1000 dollars). It's was for a business plan where my customer gave me all the informations I needed and I didn't have to collect some by myself. |

Then that's something you can leave out when estimating how much time the project will take you to do. |
| reporterwriter | Posted 7/25/2007 9:05:08 AM | show profile FWIW, the fact that the client's sending you bullet points to write up as a business plan raises red flags for me. Be certain she gives you the material you need to deliver the type of business plan most suitable for her purposes. Draw up a contract for the job, and get paid at least one-third of the fee up front. |
| writesonwater | Posted 7/26/2007 12:22:45 AM | show profile Agree with Belinda. I'd never do this by the hour, not even if it was straight typesetting. But I'm guessing maybe your friend needs your writing skills to polish it up. If so, it's a great opportunity to shine. Find some others online and see what they entail, so you can help her best. This could look very nice on your resume. Good luck! |
