I'll be editing 255 pages and will have a budget for freelancers. What is the usual fee most editors charge for these sorts of projects to the publisher and what are the fees based on? Any guidance would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks. |

Cool project. :-) You don't say what part of the world you're in (I'm guessing the US), nor what the freelance budget is. But presuming that it's a more-than-full-time effort on your part, I'd suggest you consider charging what you'd be paid on a full-time basis for that month, with a 50% premium tacked on for self-employment expenses. Based on my numbers, that would range from $10k to $12k. I'm curious to know what you do end up charging. Good luck! -- Di |
| Lotus665 | Posted 8/1/2007 3:16:43 PM | show profile That's almost no time to do a magazine of that size! You should charge a humongous premium for the short schedule and amount of work. It's typical to charge a flat rate or hourly rate, it just depends on the propensity of the publisher (and you). For rates, check the Editorial Freelancers Association website guidelines. Then when you quote something, refer your client to them if they balk. good luck, I hope it nets you the big bucks. |

We produce several magazines a year--one six times/year, another is twice yearly and we do some custom pubs in between. Are all 255 pages editorial? Are some ads? Are you responsible for the ads? Will you also handle the production and uploading completed files to the printeror is that handed over to someone else? You may want to charge an hourly rate...$18-20/hour minimum (perhaps more depending on where you are) and expect to put in a lot of hours. |
