How long does it normally take to hear back on a query? Do all thoughtful pitches merit a response?

I sent them two things. One receive a quick, personal response from the managing editor. The other was never responded to.

if you don't hear something in three weeks, move on.

I've been thinking about pitching them too ...
dribble, stanley; did you pitch an idea or send a completed story? If it was a pitch, can you give a few hints as to how you wrote it?

I'm curious because the ideas I have can really be explained in a short graf or two - it's not like a story where you have to show the seven experts you can get or the 20 research articles you've already read ....

(btw; good luck gonzo .... )

unsolicited advice
You didn't ask me, but I'd pitch an idea, not an entire story. First, I can't imagine editors have the time or will take the time to read an entire story (even a great one) when there are hundreds of queries to slosh through. Second, I think editors would like to get in on the ground floor of an idea rather than something that's a little further along. Good luck to you, too!

I sent in a humorous essay. They almost bite, but decided no.

For talk of the town, they need to be relevant to that week, timely, and fairly short. If you have never been in the magazine before and know no one you can run the idea by, I would just go ahead and submit it on spec. Just email it in and cross your fingers. If you do pitch an idea instead, try to do it 2-3 weeks in advance.

I agree with granite girl because the pieces in Talk are
almost always something that just happened that past
week.
